A SHORT
BIOGRAPHY OF …
… MICHAEL SCOTT GAIMAN |
Born in East Flatbush, Brooklyn where he attended Woody Allen’s alma mater, Midwood High School. He grew up loving The Beatles, the New
York Mets, and all things science fiction … about which he has an eidetic memory.
In 1971, he won First Prize in the New York State Science Fair with a project entitled “Radioimmunoassay of Rat Somatotrophic Hormone” and an
all expense paid trip to Kansas City for the Westinghouse Science Fair, where he won a gold medal. |
 |
|
He attended Stony Brook University on a full scholarship as part of the
Downstate/SUNY pre-med program, but lost interest in academics when
he became a DJ for WUSB radio and was elected concert chairman at the school.
In 1976, he became a college talent buyer for Supreme Artists and booked Fleetwood Mac and Boston while both enjoyed their first #1 records. |
 |
n 1977, he founded True Star Talent, booking college appearances for Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band, which landed him a job at John
Scher’s Monarch Entertainment as college agent for Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band & Bobby and The Midnights. Over the next four years,
Gaiman booked and produced over 800 concerts for over 100 colleges, winning Billboard’s College Talent Buyer of the Year Award twice. During
his tenure at Monarch, he booked the first ever U.S. dates on The Pretenders (Buffalo State College) and Joe Jackson (Montclair State College),
and some of the first ever shows for Meatloaf, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, and The Police to name a few. He left Monarch in 1982 and founded the
Cannibal Agency, bringing Richard & Linda Thompson to America for the first time, reuniting The Band, Hot Tuna, and Byrd’s founders David
Crosby and Roger McGuinn. He also produced the 20th Anniversary “Trips Festival” and the last ever show at the Fillmore East, a Pacifica Radio
Benefit with the late Abbie Hoffman. |
In 1986, Gaiman left the music business to drive a New York City medallion taxicab and pursue a career as a science fiction writer. In 1989,
however, he was ‘drafted’ by Earth Alliance, a rain forest reclamation benefit organization, working under the auspices of Noel Brown and The
United Nations Environment Program.
While there, he organized an all-star celebrity billiards tournament that featured Paul
Sorvino, Ray Sharkey, Sean Young, Jefferson Airplane, Johnny & Edgar Winter, BB King, and the New York Dolls. The event raised more than five million dollars in corporate donations. It also sucked
him back into the agency business. From 1989-91 he worked for Associate Booking Corporation where he booked BB King, The
O’Jays, Roberta Flack, and was responsible agent for The Wailers, Merl Saunders and Bobby “Blue” Bland. |
In 1991, he departed his hometown for Los Angeles-based Variety Artists where he advised and helped cultivate the (legendary rock impresario)
Bill Graham-managed Blues Traveler. Shortly thereafter, Graham ‘anointed’ Gaiman manager of Jefferson Starship, a position he holds to this
day. Graham had read a stage play treatment written by Gaiman years earlier. The treatment was based on Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship’s
award-winning science fiction/rock concept record “Blows Against the Empire.” Before his 1991 death in a helicopter crash, Graham was set to
produce a mammoth stage play of Gaiman’s treatment, featuring members of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, as well as David Crosby, Graham
Nash, and Robin Williams.
In 1992, Gaiman created Mission Control: Tour Direction, a
firm instrumental in shaping the then-burgeoning/
now-popular ‘jam band’ scene. He went on to create a
series of high concept bands with handpicked lineups. Jazz
is Dead featured Billy Cobham and (the-unknown hippie
guitar god) Jimmy Herring (later with Phil Lesh, Allman
Bros. and The Dead). He chose their repertoire and
produced three acclaimed releases for Zebra Records (WEA).
Blue Floyd featured members of The Black Crowes, Allman
Bros, and Gov’t Mule, and released five stellar live
recordings, all produced by Gaiman. |

|
In 1995, Sony Pictures took an interest in “Blows Against The Empire” and asked Gaiman to write its screen story. Just as the studio and Peter
Fonda set to make the deal, the Sony executive overseeing the project was stricken with cancer, and “Blows” was shelved, where it has laid fallow
all these years.
|
n 2000, he created CIA (CD Internet Archive) presaging the success of Napster and iTunes – releasing live recordings of complete concert
performances by his artists.
In 2004 he toured The Musical Box, the “Authentic, Exclusively Authorized by Genesis” stage production of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.”
He continues to exclusively represent this theatrical phenomenon and their performances “Selling England By The Pound,” “The Black Show” and
next year’s highly anticipated “Trick Of The Tale.”
|
 |
In 2005, Gaiman created the “Jefferson Family Galactic Reunion” featuring original members of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver
Messenger Service, Big Brother & The Holding Company, plus Country Joe McDonald – all to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of “The San
Francisco Sound.” The highly successful project toured the world, performing 65 shows in 12 countries through 2006
In 2007 he created “The Summer of Love 40th Anniversary Tour” featuring original members of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver
Messenger Service, Big Brother & The Holding Company, and It’s A Beautiful Day to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of “Monterey Pop” and “The
Summer of Love.” The highly successful project performed 26 shows and has extended into this year. |
 |
He is currently producing “Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty” for Airline/SONY, marking the first time in 12 years the members of Jefferson Starship have
recorded a new album. “Tree” features Paul Kantner, David
Freiberg, Chris Smith, Prairie Prince, David Grisman, Barry Sless, David
Laflamme, Darby Gould, Diana Mangano and Jefferson Starship’s new female lead vocalist, the sensational Grammy nominated Cathy Richardson.
Gaiman also hand picked much of the album’s material which covers songs of protest and social conscience by Woody Guthrie, Pete
Seeger, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Dino Valenti and Paul Kantner … and some that date back to The Revolutionary War.
Partnering with Rob Ayling/Voiceprint UK, he is soon to launch Bear Discs, a custom label specializing in the release of archival audio and video
recordings, specializing in West Coast music. |
| He continues to manage and book concerts for Jefferson Starship and Quicksilver Messenger Service and is planning 2009’s “Original Heroes of
Woodstock Tour”.” |
